ALFA is Partnering with Real Time Data to Advance Deckhand’s Logbook Platform

The investment will support the development of Deckhand, an electronic platform that aims to revolutionize sustainable commercial fisheries management worldwide.

[Bellingham, WA] – Real Time Data, a global provider of advanced data collection solutions for the commercial seafood industry, announced today that the company has secured a strategic investment from Builders Vision, a Chicago-based impact platform dedicated to building a more humane and healthy planet. The partnership is the latest investment for the company, which has raised USD $750,000 in this round, including from existing investors who have a strong belief in its success, and aims to enhance the capabilities of Deckhand, Real Time Data's flagship electronic logbook technology that captures catch, environmental, and fishing business data on the ocean. The technology was designed to better measure and promote sustainability in the fishing and seafood industry.

Deckhand is a state-of-the-art electronic logbook technology that enables seafood industry professionals to collect and share comprehensive, accurate, and timely information about their activities, which saves users time and reduces the cost of operations and compliance.

“Deckhand makes the Evening Star a safer workplace, takes up less room in the wheelhouse, doesn’t forget things and saves the captain a great deal of time,” said John Koll Bruce, captain of the F/V Evening Star, which fishes halibut and sablefish in the Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea. “It’s a game changer in terms of how we collect business and required logbook data at sea.”

“SEPFA has been working with Real Time Data since 2014 and was the first commercial customer,” said Nathan Kimber, Executive Director of the South Eastern Professional Fisherman’s Association (SEPFA). “Since then, we have enjoyed a long and productive relationship with RTD, with all our lobster fishers using Deckhand to record catch and effort.”

With Builders Vision's strategic investment, Deckhand will be further developed to play a pivotal role in modernizing data collection, driving efficiency improvements, and enabling real-time, data-rich fisheries management practices in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and elsewhere.

Real Time Data's CEO, Gary Wisniewski, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, "Builders Vision's investment in Deckhand is a testament to their commitment to sustainability and embracing the opportunities around technological innovation. With their support, Deckhand will become an even more powerful tool for collecting data on the ocean. Together, we will drive positive change in sustainability and the future of fishing businesses enabled through collecting and leveraging better data from the front lines."

The collaboration between Builders Vision and Real Time Data will empower end users of the Deckhand platform by enabling better tracking and measurement of sustainability-related metrics. The enhanced Deckhand technology made possible through this investment will provide invaluable insights, leading to a better understanding of the changing dynamics of the ocean.

"We are thrilled to partner with Real Time Data and invest in the development of Deckhand, an innovative technology that makes life easier for harvesters, processors, and fisheries managers," said James Lindsay, Investment Director at Builders Vision. "As an impact platform, we recognize the importance and value of collecting accurate, real-time data and believe that this tool will help support the long-term health of sustainably-managed fish stocks, which play a critical role supporting working waterfronts, coastal communities, and healthy marine ecosystems."
